The Seventeenth Tripartite Presidents Meeting among NIES, NIER, and CRAES
President CHANG Yoon Seok expressed his gratitude and pleasure to meet delegation from NIES and CRAES through the online platform amid growing concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. Under harsh conditions, President CHANG was proud to introduce achievements NIER has made. A first milestone is NIER’s launch of environmental satellite, Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) in February 2020. This satellite can monitor over South Korea and the greater Asia-Pacific region for the first time. Korea stands shoulder to shoulder with the Europe and US to keep monitoring atmosphere environments. In an effort for a blue sky, air quality monitoring stations in operation have networked with local research institutes to analyze the phenomenon and cause of air pollution by region. A second milestone has been made in Environmental Health. The Korean National Environmental Health Survey has been conducted to investigate the effect of areas vulnerable to pollution on people’s health especially children. In addition, NIER has conducted research on the risk assessment of environmentally harmful factors, and based on this research has come up with scientific measures. A third milestone is action on the problem of wastes. As part of efforts to deal with increasing wastes in a safe and efficient manner, NIER has conducted research on the entire process of wasted plastics recycling. NIER has also studied efficient management measures for non-combustible materials being carried into incineration facilities in order to decrease the amount of incineration. In the end of keynote speech, President CHANG concluded that this is a good opportunity to look back on the history of TPM and a meaningful online meeting. Going forward, he hopes that three institutes will have frequent meetings on the new platform.
