National Institute of Environmental Research, Ministry of Environment has been developing Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) to improve capabilities to monitor and forecast climate change and air quality in the Korean Peninsula and East Asia. GEMS is loaded aboard GEO-KOMPSAT2B1) which is planned to be launched from 2019 to 2020. Air pollutants and causes of climate change including SO2, NO2, O3, HCHO and aerosols will be observed with UV-Visible hyperspectral sensor. Formation flying with TEMPO of the USA and Sentinel-4 of Europe which are planned to be launched after 2019 are expected to create synergistic effects: better understanding of worldwide changes in tropospheric environment, etc.
